Anhydrous Hydrogen Bromide
The method of making hydrogen bromide
If you want to obtain anhydrous hydrogen bromide, there are various methods. It can make bromine interact with red phosphorus and water. First place red phosphorus in the container, drop bromine on it, and add water slowly. When bromine and phosphorus meet, it will react, and phosphorus bromide will be produced. When phosphorus bromide meets water, it will decompose to produce hydrogen bromide. The reaction formula is as follows:
\ (2P + 3Br_ {2} = 2PBr_ {3}\)
\ (PBr_ {3} + 3H_ {2} O = H_ {3} PO_ {3} + 3HBr ↑\)
The obtained hydrogen bromide gas often contains impurities and must be cleaned by an appropriate method. Through a tube containing glass wool and phosphorus pentoxide, the glass wool can stop the fog droplets, and phosphorus pentoxide absorbs water vapor, so that pure anhydrous hydrogen bromide can be obtained.
Another method is to co-heat sodium bromide with concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction is as follows:
\ (NaBr + H_ {2} SO_ {4} (concentrated) \ stackrel {\ Delta }{=\!=\!=} NaHSO_ {4} + HBr ↑\)
However, the oxidation of sulfuric acid cannot be ignored, or some hydrogen bromide is oxidized to bromine, resulting in impure products. Therefore, if you want to get the best, you should control the temperature and choose an appropriate concentration of sulfuric acid, and then you need to clean the gas to remove impurities before you can obtain anhydrous hydrogen bromide.
