Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen Nitrogen
At the beginning of heaven and earth, all things began to sprout. Qi condenses and gathers in form, and the quality is divided into categories. There are four things in between, which are the foundation of all forms, called carbon (Carbon), hydrogen (Hydrogen), oxygen (Oxygen), and nitrogen (Nitrogen).
Carbon is like the strength of beams and pillars, hidden in gold and stone, and transformed into all things. It is the essence of form and quality. Hydrogen is the lightest and most flexible, floating in qi, melting in water and swamp, agile and changeable. Oxygen is the source of nourishing life, on which humans and beasts rely, and on which things burn. Nitrogen is the source of filling heaven and earth, quiet and stable, cultivating vitality, and seeing merit in invisible places.
These four things interact with each other and change endlessly. They either gather into the body of mountains and rivers, or disperse into the image of wind and clouds; or transform into the body of living beings, for the need of qi and blood; or condense in the body of plants and trees, into the shape of flowers and leaves. Its change is beyond human measurement; its use is the grand work of heaven and earth.
It is to observe all the phenomena of heaven and earth, all of which are derived from the transformation of the four things. Only by observing its changes and exploring its reasons can we know the wonders of creation and the mystery of the life of all things.
