This acidity can react with many substances. For example, when it encounters alkali substances, a neutralization reaction will occur. Take sodium hydroxide ($NaOH $) as an example. Hydrogen chloride reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium chloride ($NaCl $) and water ($H_2O $). The chemical reaction equation is: $HCl + NaOH = NaCl + H_2O $. The essence of this reaction is that hydrogen ions combine with hydroxide ions to form water, fully demonstrating the acidic nature of hydrogen chloride.

Second, hydrogen chloride can react with certain metals. Active metals such as zinc ($Zn $), iron ($Fe $), etc., can undergo displacement reactions with hydrogen chloride. When zinc comes into contact with hydrogen chloride, zinc atoms lose electrons and become zinc ions ($Zn ^ {2 + }$), and hydrogen ions in hydrogen chloride gain electrons to form hydrogen gas ($H_2 $). The reaction equation is: $Zn + 2HCl = ZnCl_2 + H_2 ↑ $. Through such reactions, the role of hydrogen chloride in redox reactions can be clearly understood. Its hydrogen ion acts as an oxidant, and the acquired electrons are reduced.

Furthermore, hydrogen chloride can react with some metal oxides under specific conditions. Take copper oxide ($CuO $) as an example, hydrogen chloride reacts with copper oxide to form copper chloride ($CuCl_2 $) and water. In this reaction, the oxygen atoms in copper oxide combine with the hydrogen atoms in hydrogen chloride to form water, and the copper ions combine with chloride ions to form copper chloride. The reaction equation is: $CuO + 2HCl = CuCl_2 + H_2O $. This reaction shows that hydrogen chloride can be used to dissolve some metal oxides, and has wide applications in practical chemical production and analytical testing.
