Cost of Hydrogen Fuel

On the cost of hydrogen fuel
In today's world, hydrogen fuel is gradually emerging, but its cost is mostly discussed by everyone.

Guanfu hydrogen fuel is produced in different ways, and the cost is also unique. First, the fossil fuel reforming method, although the technology is more familiar, but the raw materials are consumed more and accompanied by carbon emissions, and the equipment input and energy consumption in the process are not cheap. This method of hydrogen production requires capital from the purchase and storage of raw materials to the construction and maintenance of the reaction device. If natural gas reforming is used, special reforming equipment needs to be installed, which is expensive, and it consumes gas and electricity during operation. Under the calculation, the cost is the highest.

Second, electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen. Water is widely sourced. However, the electrolysis process requires a large amount of electricity, and the price of electricity is directly related to the cost of hydrogen. If the electricity is taken from traditional thermal power, although hydrogen can be obtained, the cost of thermal power is transferred to hydrogen without decarbonization. If the electricity is derived from renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics and wind power, although it is clean, such power sources are unstable, and energy storage facilities also require costs, which makes it difficult to reduce the overall cost of hydrogen production.

Furthermore, hydrogen fuel storage and transportation also add to the cost. The characteristics of hydrogen make its storage require special conditions such as high pressure and low temperature. High-pressure hydrogen storage requires special high-pressure vessels with excellent materials and complex processes, so the cost is naturally not low. Although low-temperature liquid hydrogen storage has high density, it requires continuous energy consumption of refrigeration equipment to maintain low temperatures. As for transportation, the cost of pipeline transportation is extremely high, and the investment in pipeline construction is huge; vehicle transportation is limited by load and safety, which also increases costs.

When the end point is applied, the cost of hydrogen fuel cell system cannot be ignored. Its core components, catalysts, proton exchange membranes, etc., have high technical thresholds and limited production scale, making it difficult to reduce costs. And the life and performance stability of fuel cells still need to be improved, and maintenance costs are also an expense.

To sum up, the cost of hydrogen fuel is constrained by multiple links such as production, storage and transportation, and application. To reduce its cost, it is necessary to make efforts in all aspects, technological innovation, and large-scale production, so that the cost of hydrogen fuel can be expected to be close to the people and can be widely used.
