Cost To Produce Hydrogen

The cost theory of hydrogen production
In today's world, when it comes to the industry of hydrogen production, the cost is what it needs. The way to cover hydrogen production is related to people's livelihood and national plans, and the cost is high or low, which is the cardinal of its rise and fall.

The method of hydrogen production is numerous. There are those based on fossil fuels, which are easy to implement at the beginning, but their sources are limited, and they are cumbersome in the environment. In addition to the cost of mining and refining, the cost of catalysts and equipment used is not low. For example, coal gasification to produce hydrogen, coal mining requires labor and equipment. During the gasification process, the conditions of high temperature and high pressure are created, which cannot be done without huge investment. And the subsequent gas purification, separation and other processes are expensive and laborious, so the cost remains high.

There are also people who use water electrolysis to extract hydrogen. Water is the most widely available and cheap thing, but electrolysis requires a lot of electricity. If the electricity is obtained from traditional thermal power, although hydrogen can be produced, the cost and pollution of thermal power itself are burdened by hydrogen production, and it is ultimately not a good strategy. If the power supply is powered by renewable energy such as wind power and photovoltaics, although it is suitable for environmental protection, such energy sources are limited by weather conditions and regions, the supply is often unstable, and the energy storage technology is not perfect. To make electrolysis sustainable and efficient, the equipment investment and operation and maintenance costs are huge. It is difficult to reduce the cost easily by using water electrolysis to produce hydrogen.

There is also a method of biological hydrogen production. It seems to be a good way to produce hydrogen under mild conditions by leveraging the energy of microorganisms. However, the microbial culture conditions are harsh, the requirements for substrates are quite high, and the hydrogen production rate is slow, and the yield is limited. In order to promote its efficient hydrogen production, the precise regulation of the culture environment and the special customization of equipment have all led to higher costs.

To reduce the cost of hydrogen production, there is no one way to achieve it. At the end of the technology, we should vigorously study and strive for the refinement of catalysts to make the reaction efficient and lasting, reducing the frequency of replacement and the cost of purchase; on equipment, develop new high-efficiency devices to improve the efficiency of energy utilization and reduce energy consumption. At the industrial level, build a complete industrial chain, the scale effect is obvious, and the cost can be diluted. The government should also do something, with policy support, such as subsidies for research and development, preferential electricity prices, etc., to help the hydrogen industry move forward lightly.

The control of the cost of hydrogen production is related to the prospect of widespread use of hydrogen energy in the world. All parties work together, with scientific wisdom and tenacity, to break the dilemma of cost, so that hydrogen energy can thrive in the world and benefit future generations.
