Between heaven and earth, everything is composed of tiny particles, and the interaction between them is mysterious. Hydrogen bonding is a unique intermolecular force. Although it is not as strong as the covalent bond, it has a far-reaching impact on the properties of many substances.

The so-called hydrogen bond is actually a hydrogen atom and an extremely electronegative atom (such as fluorine, oxygen, nitrogen, etc.) are connected by a covalent bond. After the hydrogen atom is slightly positive due to the deviation of the electron cloud, it is attracted to another atom with strong electronegativity and lone pairs of electrons. The force of attraction is comparable to the unusual electrostatic attractive force, which has certain directionality and saturation.

Looking at the properties of water shows the importance of hydrogen bonds. Water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen, and hydrogen bonds between water molecules are crisscrossed. Due to its existence, the boiling point of water is different from common sense and is higher than that of hydrides of the same family. If there is no hydrogen bond between water molecules, water may be in a gaseous state, the rivers, lakes and seas in the world will not exist, and the source of life will also be exhausted.

In biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids, hydrogen bonds are crucial. The secondary structure of proteins, alpha-helix and beta-fold, all rely on hydrogen bonds to maintain their stability. The base pairing of nucleic acids is also due to the power of hydrogen bonds, which allows for accurate transmission of genetic information. Without hydrogen bonds, the delicate structure and complex activities of life are all in vain.

Hydrogen bonds also have a significant impact on the crystal structure, the solubility of organic matter, and many other fields. It may make the crystal structure regular and orderly, or make some organic matter mutually dissolve in a specific solvent.

Alas! Although hydrogen bonds are small, they cannot be ignored in the nature of matter, the operation of life, and even the state of things in the world.
