How Hydrogen Peroxide Works in Ear

The principle of action of hydrogen peroxide in the ear
Hydrogen peroxide, chemically called hydrogen peroxide, plays a unique and important role in the ear.

Its primary role is based on strong oxidation. When hydrogen peroxide is dripped into the ear canal and comes into contact with the environment in the ear, it rapidly decomposes and releases new oxygen. New oxygen is extremely active and has strong oxidation ability, which can attack the structure and composition of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses in the ear. For example, it can oxidize the cell wall and cell membrane of bacteria, destroy its integrity, and leak the cell contents, which in turn leads to bacterial death. It effectively kills common pathogens in the external ear canal and middle ear, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, to prevent and reduce ear infections.

At the same time, the bubbles produced by the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide have a mechanical cleaning effect. Bubbles are generated and moved in the ear canal, which can soften, dilute and push the accumulated cerumen (earwax) and secretions in the ear, making it easier to discharge. For example, some dry cerumen, under the action of hydrogen peroxide, become easy to clean, keep the ear canal unobstructed, and prevent hearing loss and ear tightness caused by cerumen embolism.

Furthermore, the use of hydrogen peroxide can also improve the local microenvironment of the ear. Its decomposition products are water and oxygen, and oxygen can increase the oxygen content of the ear tissue, promote local blood circulation and tissue metabolism. For example, for some inflammation caused by poor blood circulation in the ear, adequate oxygen supply helps the inflammation subside and tissue repair, creating good conditions for the recovery of ear health.
