How They Make Hydrogen Peroxide

"On the Preparation of Hydrogen Peroxide"

Hydrogen peroxide is an important chemical substance. The methods of its preparation vary.

One method is to prepare barium peroxide and dilute sulfuric acid. Take an appropriate amount of barium peroxide, put it in a clean vessel, and slowly inject dilute sulfuric acid. The two are combined in phase, that is, the precipitation of raw barium sulfate and hydrogen peroxide. Afterwards, considering that barium sulfate is insoluble in water, you can apply filtration to remove its precipitation, and obtain a solution of hydrogen peroxide. This process also requires careful observation of the reaction situation and control of its rate to prevent overstimulation.

Another method is the ethyl anthraquinone method. First, ethyl anthraquinone and hydrogen are hydrogenated with the help of a catalyst to produce ethyl hydroanthraquinone. Then, the product meets with oxygen to form ethyl anthraquinone and hydrogen peroxide. In this process, ethyl anthraquinone is like a boat, and it goes back and forth, helping the reaction, but its own loss is quite small. This way is also efficient and convenient, and it is a common method for industrial production of hydrogen peroxide. It has high requirements for equipment and technology, and requires precise regulation of temperature and pressure conditions to achieve the best yield.

Furthermore, hydrogen peroxide can also be obtained by electrolysis. Ammonium bisulfate is used as the electrolyte, and current is passed. At the anode, hydrogen sulfate ions lose electrons and give birth to disulfate ions. This ion meets water and hydrolyzes to form hydrogen peroxide. Although the principle of this method is clear, it requires a lot of electricity and the cost is also high, so it is not as widely used as the former two.

All these methods have advantages and disadvantages. In actual preparation, when the required quantity, cost, and purity factors are carefully selected, the preparation of hydrogen peroxide can be made suitable for practical needs.
