Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars Cost Factors

On the cost of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
In today's world, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are becoming more and more popular, but their cost is quite high, which hinders their widespread use. It is urgent to analyze its cost factors.

First on the manufacturing cost. The manufacturing of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is technically refined and the process is complex. The manufacture of battery stacks requires precious metal platinum as a catalyst. The platinum price is high and the resources are scarce, which is the reason for the large increase in cost. Moreover, the manufacturing technology of battery stacks is still in progress, and the yield rate is not very high, which makes it difficult to reduce the production cost. And the integration of automotive power systems requires high technology, and the investment in research and development is huge, which also weighs down the cost.

Second talk about the cost of hydrogen sources. Hydrogen production, storage and transportation are not easy. Hydrogen production is commonly used in water electrolysis and fossil fuel reforming. Water electrolysis requires a lot of electricity, and the price of electricity is directly related to the cost of hydrogen; although the cost of fossil fuel reforming is slightly lower, it involves many issues such as environmental protection. Hydrogen storage, due to its high activity and easy leakage, requires special high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks or low-temperature liquid hydrogen storage tanks, which are expensive. As for transportation, whether it is pipeline hydrogen transportation or vehicle transportation, professional facilities are required, and the cost is also high.

Furthermore, the market size factor cannot be ignored. Today's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market is still small, and the production scale has not yet achieved the economies of scale. Parts production has not reached the scale, and the cost of a single piece is difficult to reduce. And infrastructure building lags behind, hydrogen refueling stations are scarce, and the cost of building hydrogen refueling stations is high, which also contributes to the cost of automobiles.

To reduce the cost of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, a multi-pronged approach is required. Develop new catalysts, reduce platinum usage or find alternative materials; improve manufacturing technology, improve battery stack yield and power system integration level. Optimize the production process for hydrogen sources, reduce the cost of hydrogen production; develop efficient storage and transportation technologies. More policy support is needed to expand market scale and promote infrastructure building. In this way, the cost of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles may be reduced, and then it will be widely used in the world.
