To store efficiently, high-pressure compression may be required, but high-pressure equipment is expensive and the safety risk is also increased; or liquefied at low temperature, but maintaining low temperature requires a lot of energy, and the technical requirements are extremely high. Furthermore, although the research and development of hydrogen storage materials has made progress, there is still a long way to go before it is widely used.
As for the transportation of hydrogen, it also faces many difficulties. Pipeline transportation of hydrogen requires special pipelines, because it is easy to cause hydrogen embrittlement of metal materials, and ordinary pipelines are unusable. And the transportation of high-pressure hydrogen or liquid hydrogen by vehicles is expensive and inefficient, and the loss on the way should not be underestimated. All of these restrict the circulation and application of hydrogen fuel in a wide area.
Furthermore, the infrastructure for hydrogen fuel application is scarce. The number of hydrogen refueling stations is scarce, and the cost of building hydrogen refueling stations is extremely high. From site selection, equipment purchase and installation to operation and maintenance, huge sums of money are required. And due to the scarcity of hydrogen refueling stations, after consumers purchase hydrogen energy vehicles, hydrogen refueling is inconvenient, which in turn restricts the promotion of end point applications such as hydrogen energy vehicles.
Although the prospect of using hydrogen as fuel is attractive, the challenges in production, storage, transportation and infrastructure, if not properly addressed, may not become a prairie fire and become the main force of energy reform. Therefore, all parties should work together to attack and overcome these difficulties, so that hydrogen fuel can be expected to make great progress in the future.
