The cost of hydrogen fuel is related to all things, its impact is wide, and it plays a pivotal role in today's energy pattern. To understand its cost, we should investigate its factors.

The first is the source of production. There are many ways to produce hydrogen, such as fossil fuel reforming, water electrolysis and biological hydrogen production. Fossil fuel reformers, although the technology is mature, the cost of raw materials varies with the market, and considering environmental constraints, the cost of carbon capture and storage also adds to the cost. The method of water electrolysis, if the electricity is derived from renewable sources, clean and worry-free, the price of electricity will be high, which will greatly increase the cost. Biological hydrogen production is still under research and development, and the scale has not been reached, and the cost will be difficult to reduce.

The second is the difficulty of transportation. Hydrogen is easy to disperse and flammable, and special equipment is required for transportation. Gaseous hydrogen transportation requires high-pressure compression, which consumes huge energy; liquid hydrogen transportation requires ultra-low temperature liquefaction, which requires high equipment investment and energy consumption. And the transportation distance and the amount of transportation are all about the cost. Long-distance small-amount transportation, the cost soars; short-distance large-scale, only with the hope of reducing costs.

Another is the difficulty of storage. Hydrogen storage requires high-pressure gas cylinders, low-temperature storage tanks or solid-state hydrogen storage materials. The cost of high-pressure gas cylinders is not low, and the safety needs constant inspection and protection; the cold insulation technology of low-temperature storage tanks is strict, and the investment is expensive; although solid hydrogen storage has great potential, the technology needs to be advanced, and the cost is high.

The last is the lack of infrastructure. The construction of hydrogen refueling stations requires huge investment, from land purchase, equipment installation to operation and maintenance. And the number of hydrogen refueling stations is scarce, making it difficult to form economies of scale, and the retail cost of hydrogen fuel is high.

In summary, the cost of hydrogen fuel is constrained by factors such as production, transportation, storage and infrastructure. To reduce its cost, we must take a multi-pronged approach to develop new hydrogen production technologies, methods of optimal transportation and storage, and expand infrastructure buildings, so that hydrogen fuel can shine on the energy stage and benefit the world.
