In today's world, hydrogen energy is a popular clean energy, but its promotion and application, the cost of hydrogen fuel is the key.

The cost of hydrogen fuel comes from multiple sources. First, the method of hydrogen production is related to the huge cost. Hydrogen production by electrolysis of water, although high purity, consumes a lot of electricity, and if the electricity price is high, the cost will rise. Hydrogen production by reforming fossil fuels, although the technology is mature, is expensive to decarbonize. If carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) is not perfect, the cost will be difficult to control.

Furthermore, the difficulty of storing hydrogen also increases the cost. Hydrogen has high volatility and low density. High-pressure gaseous hydrogen storage requires pressure-resistant vessels, which is expensive to build. Low-temperature liquid hydrogen storage requires high energy consumption for refrigeration and high equipment maintenance costs. And the hydrogen storage process also requires heavy investment in safety protection.

The transportation link should not be underestimated. Pipeline hydrogen transportation has high construction costs and large initial investment. Trailer transportation, although flexible, has limited transportation capacity and sharply increased long-distance transportation costs.

As for the construction of hydrogen fuel filling stations, the investment is quite huge. Equipment purchase, site rental, operation and management costs have all increased the cost of hydrogen fuel.

To reduce the cost of hydrogen fuel, multiple measures are needed. Scientific researchers should strive to develop high-efficiency hydrogen production technologies to reduce hydrogen energy consumption; engineers should delve into new paths for hydrogen storage and transportation to reduce storage and transportation losses and costs; policymakers should provide policy support, such as subsidies, preferences, etc., to promote industrial scale expansion, in order to achieve scale effects, reduce the cost of hydrogen fuel, and make hydrogen energy universally beneficial to the world, for the benefit of all generations.
