Hydrogen peroxide and benzoyl peroxide, both contain peroxy groups, but their properties and uses are very different.

Hydrogen peroxide, its molecular formula is\ (H_ {2} O_ {2}\), pure product is colorless and transparent liquid, with strong oxidation. It is relatively stable under normal conditions, and it is easy to decompose when exposed to light, heat or catalyst, releasing oxygen. Because of its oxidizing properties, it is often used as an oxidizing agent and a bleaching agent. In the medical field, low concentrations can be used as wound disinfectants to decompose and produce oxygen and inhibit the growth of anaerobic bacteria; in industry, it is also used for pulp, fabric bleaching, etc.

And benzoyl peroxide, with the molecular formula\ (C_ {6} H_ {5} CO) _ {2} O_ {2}\), is a white crystalline powder with a bitter almond smell. It is also oxidizing, but unlike hydrogen peroxide, it is mostly used as an initiator. During the polymerization reaction, it is heated or acted by an initiator to decompose to produce free radicals and initiate monomer polymerization. In the food industry, it was used in a small amount for flour whitening, but later its use was limited due to safety considerations; in medical beauty, it can be used to treat acne and kill Propionibacterium acne with its oxidative properties.

The two have different properties. Hydrogen peroxide is a liquid state, and benzoyl peroxide is a solid powder. The stability is also different, hydrogen peroxide is relatively active, benzoyl peroxide is relatively stable. Furthermore, there are significant differences in uses. Hydrogen peroxide is mostly used for oxidation, disinfection, and bleaching; benzoyl peroxide is mostly used to initiate polymerization reactions and specific medical and cosmetic uses.
