Hydrogen Peroxide Wound Use Pros Cons

On the advantages and disadvantages of hydrogen peroxide for wounds
In the world of healing, hydrogen peroxide is often used. However, in wounds, the advantages and disadvantages coexist, which cannot be ignored.

Hydrogen peroxide has strong oxidizing properties. When used in wounds, catalase in tissues quickly decomposes and releases new oxygen. This oxygen can break the structure of bacteria, kill their vitality, and achieve the effect of disinfection and sterilization. In the case of contaminated wounds, it can remove filth and prevent the growth of infection, which is also beneficial. And its decomposition produces gas, which can loosen blood clots and pus scab, which is easy to remove and helps clean wounds.

However, there are also disadvantages. Hydrogen peroxide has strong oxidation, which can kill bacteria at the same time, or damage normal tissue cells. The newly born granulation is delicate, fragile to touch, and delays the healing period, which has one disadvantage. Furthermore, repeated use can cause changes in the local tissue microenvironment, interfere with the normal process of cell repair and regeneration, and is not conducive to healing. This has two disadvantages. And treating wounds with hydrogen peroxide often causes severe pain, and patients are miserable, which affects the medical experience. This has three disadvantages.

Therefore, doctors use hydrogen peroxide on wounds, when weighing the advantages and disadvantages. Small and clean injuries may not be used; for those with heavy pollution, it is appropriate to use it moderately, and then rinse it with normal saline, and then promote healing with appropriate methods.
