"On the Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on Wounds"

In modern times, hydrogen peroxide has been widely used for healing wounds. However, there are different opinions on its effect on wounds.

Hydrogen peroxide is chemically called hydrogen peroxide. When it encounters enzymes in the wound, it decomposes and releases oxygen, and this process can cause bubbles to emerge. Looking at its appearance, it seems to be powerful for debridement, but in fact it has both advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage is that the oxygen produced by its decomposition can inhibit the growth and reproduction of some anaerobic bacteria. In some wounds infected by anaerobic bacteria, such as tetanus bacteria, hydrogen peroxide can create an environment that is not conducive to its survival, which is a great achievement. And it decomposes and produces gas, which can wash away the dirt and foreign bodies on the surface of the wound, achieve the effect of cleaning, and help the wound heal.

The disadvantages are also obvious. Hydrogen peroxide has certain oxidative properties. Although it can sterilize, it can also damage the healthy cells in the wound. It can cause local tissue protein denaturation and hinder the normal metabolism and repair of cells. If you wash the wound with hydrogen peroxide frequently, it may cause the wound to heal slowly, and even cause adverse consequences such as scar hyperplasia.

Doctors use it when examining the condition of the wound. For shallow injuries, those with good cleaning conditions, or those without the need to use hydrogen peroxide, you can rinse with normal saline. When deep wounds are suspected of anaerobic bacteria, an appropriate amount of hydrogen peroxide can be used to clear the wound, but the follow-up should also be rinsed with normal saline to prevent its residue from causing tissue damage.

In short, the use of hydrogen peroxide in wounds needs to be weighed against the pros and cons, and it should be done with caution. It must not be abused blindly.
