Ionic Bond vs Hydrogen Bond

The distinction between ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds
The chemical bonds in the world are complex. Ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds have very different characteristics and each has its own wonders.

Ionic bonds are caused by the strong electrostatic interaction between anions and cations. When active metals and active non-metals meet, metal atoms are prone to lose electrons into cations, and non-metal atoms are prone to electrons into anions. Anions and cations attract each other to form ionic bonds. The force of this bond is strong, so ionic compounds often have high melting and boiling points. For example, sodium chloride, in its crystals, sodium ions and chloride ions are connected by ionic bonds, and the structure is stable, causing its melting point to reach more than 800 degrees Celsius. It is solid at room temperature and pressure, and requires a higher temperature to melt.

In contrast, hydrogen bonds are actually a special kind of intermolecular force. Although it is called a "bond", its strength is much weaker than that of ionic bonds. The formation of hydrogen bonds is mostly due to the covalent combination of hydrogen atoms with atoms with large electronegativity and small radius (such as fluorine, oxygen, and nitrogen). After the hydrogen atom is partially positively charged, it attracts another atom with large electronegativity. Take water as an example. In water molecules, hydrogen is connected to oxygen, and hydrogen atoms form hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atoms of neighboring water molecules. The existence of hydrogen bonds makes the physical properties of water unique. The boiling point of water is different from the common sense. Compared with hydrogen sulfide equivalent hydrides, water is strengthened by hydrogen bonding, and the boiling point is greatly increased. It is a liquid state at room temperature, which is the work of hydrogen bonds.

Ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds, one is rigid and one is soft. Ionic bonds build stable ionic structures with strong forces, and hydrogen bonds affect many properties of substances with subtle effects. The two play their respective roles in the chemical world, and together deduce the wonderful chapter of material structure and properties.
