The existence of hydrogen bonds between water ($H_ {2} O $) molecules is an important property in the field of chemistry. Water is composed of two elements, hydrogen and oxygen. A water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Due to the strong electronegativity of the oxygen atom, when it forms a covalent bond with the hydrogen atom, the electron pair is biased towards the oxygen atom, making the hydrogen atom partially positively charged and the oxygen atom partially negatively charged.

Between adjacent water molecules, a partially positively charged hydrogen atom will have an electrostatic attraction with a partially negatively charged oxygen atom in another water molecule, which is called a hydrogen bond. Although hydrogen bonds are not chemical bonds, their strength is greater than van der Waals forces.

Hydrogen bonds have a profound impact on many properties of water. For example, water has a high melting point and boiling point. Compared with hydrogen sulfide ($H_ {2} S $) and other group hydrides, due to the hydrogen bonds between water molecules, more energy is required to overcome the hydrogen bonds in order to transform water from liquid to gaseous, so the boiling point of water is higher. In addition, hydrogen bonds also affect the density of water. In solid water (ice), water molecules form a regular tetrahedral structure through hydrogen bonds, and the intermolecular voids increase, resulting in a lower density of ice than liquid water, which is also the reason why ice can float on the water surface.

In short, the existence of hydrogen bonds between water ($H_ {2} O $) molecules is of great significance to nature and life activities. Whether it is the water cycle of the earth or various physiological processes in organisms, it is closely related to it.
