Muriatic Acid Hydrogen Peroxide Dissolve Gold

On whether hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide can dissolve gold

The hereditary alchemy method often studies the reaction between various substances and gold. Hydrochloric acid, known as water in ancient times, is strong and highly corrosive; hydrogen peroxide is also a strong oxidizing agent. If the two are combined, what is its property, and whether it can dissolve gold, this is what everyone doubts.

Hydrochloric acid contains hydrogen ions and chloride ions. Chloride ions have the ability to coordinate and can complex with metal ions. However, the chemical properties of gold are extremely stable. Under normal conditions, hydrochloric acid is difficult to react when it encounters gold alone. Hydrogen peroxide has strong oxidizing properties, and when it encounters, it often grabs its electrons and oxidizes the substance.

When hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide combine, the strong oxidation of hydrogen peroxide may partially oxidize the surface of gold, resulting in gold ions. At this time, chloride ions in hydrochloric acid quickly complex with gold ions to form a stable complex, so that the oxidation reaction on the surface of gold continues to the right. In this way, it seems that there is a tendency of gradual dissolution of gold.

However, after careful investigation, this reaction is not easy. The stability of gold is extraordinary. Although hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide combine, the reaction conditions need to be precisely controlled. If the temperature is too high, hydrogen peroxide is easy to decompose; if the ratio is improper, it is difficult to promote the reaction. And in the reaction, the product of hydrogen peroxide decomposition may hinder the dissolution of gold.

To sum up, although hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide have the possibility of dissolving gold, the actual operation is difficult and cannot be achieved at will. To make gold dissolve in these two, it is necessary to study the reaction conditions, precisely control the ratio, temperature and other factors, and have a small opportunity.
