Types Of Hydrogen Bonding

The type of hydrogen bond
is the most important in chemistry. There are two types, called intermolecular hydrogen bonds and intramolecular hydrogen bonds.

Intermolecular hydrogen bonds are hydrogen bonds formed between different molecules. For example, in water, the hydrogen of one water molecule is linked to the oxygen of other water molecules, forming a hydrogen bond. This increases the boiling point and melting point of water, and increases the attractive force between molecules. If ammonia, ammonia molecules also have hydrogen bonds, which have a huge impact on their physical properties.

Intramolecular hydrogen bonds are hydrogen bonds formed between atoms within a molecule. Such as o-nitrophenol, the oxygen of the nitro group forms a hydrogen bond with the hydrogen of the hydroxyl group. This decreases the melting and boiling point of the substance, and the attractive force between molecules is reduced due to the formation of hydrogen bonds within the molecule.

Intermolecular hydrogen bonds tend to stabilize the properties of substances, which has a significant impact on condensed matter; intramolecular hydrogen bonds often change the reactivity and stability of compounds. Both are useful in the interpretation of chemical phenomena and the exploration of material properties. Knowing the type of hydrogen bond is of great benefit to the study of chemistry.
