What Is Hydrogen Sulphide

Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless and stinky gas with rotten eggs. Its chemical formula is $H_ {2} S $, which is formed by the combination of hydrogen and sulfur.

This gas occurs in nature, and can be seen in volcanic eruptions, anaerobic decomposition of swamps and wetlands, and some mineral veins. In the industrial field, many chemical processes also produce hydrogen sulfide. For example, during petroleum refining, natural gas extraction and treatment, sulfur-containing compounds will escape this gas through chemical reactions.

Hydrogen sulfide is very active. It is flammable and burns in the air when exposed to open flames, generating sulfur dioxide and water. This gas is highly toxic and harmful to the human body. Inhalation of a small amount can cause eye, nose, and throat discomfort, such as tingling, runny nose, cough, etc. Inhalation of a large amount can seriously damage the nervous system, respiratory system, and even life-threatening. Its density is higher than that of air, so it mostly accumulates in low-lying places.

In the environment, if hydrogen sulfide is released in excess, it will not only endanger biological health, but also cause pollution to the atmospheric environment and cause many environmental problems such as acid rain. Therefore, it is essential for the monitoring, protection and treatment of hydrogen sulfide.
