What Is Standard Hydrogen Electrode

On the standard hydrogen electrode

husband electrode, in the field of electrochemistry, is the most important thing. And the standard hydrogen electrode is the benchmark for electrode potential measurement, just like weighing the weight, the rules are in the square.

Standard hydrogen electrodes use platinum as the electrode material. Platinum has stable properties, is not easy to react with common substances, and has excellent conductivity and catalytic activity. In this electrode, the surface of platinum is plated with platinum black. This platinum black design is intended to increase the surface area of the electrode, making it easier for hydrogen to absorb and react, just like opening the door to wide acceptance and promoting the reaction speed.

The construction of a standard hydrogen electrode requires placing a platinum sheet plated with platinum black in a solution with a hydrogen ion activity of 1mol/L. This solution, like a soil and water, provides a suitable medium for the development of the reaction. Then, pure hydrogen at a standard pressure (100kPa) is continuously introduced into the solution. Hydrogen is like a smart guest, and reacts delicately with hydrogen ions in the solution on the surface of platinum.

The principle of its reaction is based on the principle of redox. Hydrogen loses electrons and oxidizes into hydrogen ions. The transfer of this electron generates an electric potential on the surface of the electrode. This potential is the electric potential of the standard hydrogen electrode, and it is artificially specified to be zero volts. This regulation is like establishing a center of the earth for the world of electrochemistry, and the electric potentials of all electrodes are measured with reference to this.

Standard hydrogen electrodes are of great significance in the research and application of electrochemistry. If a scholar wants to measure the electric potential of an electrode, he must use the standard hydrogen electrode as a reference. Connect the electrode to be tested to the standard hydrogen electrode to form a primary battery. With fine instruments, measure the electromotive force of this primary battery. The value of this electromotive force is related to the potential difference between the electrode to be measured and the standard hydrogen electrode. Through clever calculation and analysis, the electric potential of the electrode to be measured can be known.

In many fields of industrial production and scientific research, the application of standard hydrogen electrodes is also very wide. For example, in the research and development of batteries, the accurate determination of electrode potential is related to the performance and efficiency of batteries; in the study of corrosion protection of metals, the grasp of electrode potential provides key clues for finding effective protection methods.

Therefore, although the standard hydrogen electrode is tiny, it has laid a solid foundation in the building of electrochemistry, laying a solid foundation for human beings to explore the mysteries of electrochemistry and promote the development of related fields.
