What Is The Family Of Hydrogen

There are many opinions about the nature of hydrogen. Or it belongs to the alkali metal group, because it has only one outer electron, just like alkali metals, and is prone to lose electrons into cations. However, the properties of hydrogen are different from alkali metals. Alkali metals are very active and react violently in water, while hydrogen is relatively stable under normal conditions.

There are also those who belong to the halogen group with hydrogen. Halogens want to achieve an octet stable structure and often acquire an electron. Hydrogen also has a tendency to gain an electron to form an anion, which can be seen in some compounds, such as sodium hydride. However, halogens are mostly diatomic molecules and have oxidizing properties. Although hydrogen has a certain degree of reduction, the chemical properties of the two are really different.

Hydrogen is unique and very simple, with its electronic structure, only one proton and one electron. In the periodic table, although it is often listed above alkali metals, its properties are neither completely alkali metals nor exactly the same as halogens. Hydrogen loses electrons, gains electrons, or shares electrons with other atoms in many chemical reactions, exhibiting various chemical behaviors. Therefore, hydrogen is self-contained, and its categories cannot be generalized simply by traditional groups such as alkali metals or halogens. It should be explored in detail with its unique properties and reaction behaviors.
